Coffee, a globally popular beverage, is highly vulnerable to climate change. While demand is projected to triple by 2050, climate change could cut suitable coffee-growing land by 50%, leading to supply chain shocks and income loss for 12.5 million farmers. As farmers move to higher altitudes, deforestation in sensitive mountain ecosystems is increasing.
Regenerative coffee farming can enhance climate resilience, reduce deforestation, and boost yields and farmer incomes. Similarly, cocoa farming, especially in Uganda, contributes to deforestation and faces challenges like poverty and child labor. Sustainable agroforestry practices can mitigate these issues while increasing carbon sequestration.
Regenerate Africa supports the transition to regenerative coffee and cocoa production by identifying financing gaps and mobilizing support from businesses, investors, and philanthropists. The initiative aims to create resilient, low-emission value chains while restoring ecosystems in key growing regions.
