Regenerative Agriculture and Landscapes

Agriculture is vital to Africa’s economy, contributing 20% to GDP and employing over 60% of the workforce. However, land degradation and climate change are projected to reduce agricultural output by 18%, despite a need to triple food supply by 2050. Intensive farming practices are harming ecosystems and accelerating climate change. Regenerative agriculture offers a sustainable alternative by prioritizing soil health, biodiversity, water quality, and climate resilience. Rooted in Indigenous wisdom, it promotes farming in harmony with nature. Regenerate Africa supports the shift to regenerative farming by helping farms and businesses improve soil and environmental health. It also connects farmers to carbon credit markets and subsidies, rewarding them financially for removing CO₂ from the atmosphere—funded by organizations aiming for carbon neutrality.

Regenerative Commodities

Regenerate Africa supports the sustainable production of diverse crops and livestock while restoring degraded landscapes, managing risks, and ensuring profitability. The organization focuses on high-impact commodities such as coffee, cocoa, bananas, livestock, and fruits like avocado, jackfruit, mango, and citrus due to their environmental and socio-economic challenges.
Sustainable agribusinesses have the potential to combat climate change, restore ecosystems, and create employment. However, many in Sub-Saharan Africa struggle with market access and fundraising. To address this, Regenerate Africa offers free technical assistance to small and medium agribusinesses in East Africa engaged in regenerative, agroforestry-based production systems.

Regenerative Coffee and Cocoa

Coffee, a globally popular beverage, is highly vulnerable to climate change. While demand is projected to triple by 2050, climate change could cut suitable coffee-growing land by 50%, leading to supply chain shocks and income loss for 12.5 million farmers. As farmers move to higher altitudes, deforestation in sensitive mountain ecosystems is increasing.
Regenerative coffee farming can enhance climate resilience, reduce deforestation, and boost yields and farmer incomes. Similarly, cocoa farming, especially in Uganda, contributes to deforestation and faces challenges like poverty and child labor. Sustainable agroforestry practices can mitigate these issues while increasing carbon sequestration.
Regenerate Africa supports the transition to regenerative coffee and cocoa production by identifying financing gaps and mobilizing support from businesses, investors, and philanthropists. The initiative aims to create resilient, low-emission value chains while restoring ecosystems in key growing regions.

Regenerative Grazing

A key element of regenerative agriculture is the strategic use of livestock to enhance soil and ecosystem health. Practices such as rotational grazing, planting trees for shade, diversifying pasture grasses, and integrating grazing with crop cycles improve biodiversity and reduce the need for antibiotics and de-wormers.

Regenerative Grazing (REGRAZE) Uganda, led by Regenerate Africa, promotes these methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from meat production and improve climate resilience. By enhancing soil health and carbon sequestration, regenerative grazing supports biodiversity, reduces pollution, and strengthens farm resilience.

Regenerate Africa operates a model Regenerative Farm in Nalumuli Bay with over 200 cattle, inspiring over 500 smallholder farmers to adopt these practices. The approach includes rotational grazing, adaptive livestock management, and integrating legumes to enrich soil nutrients.

Historically, livestock and crops were integrated, creating a natural nutrient loop through manure use. Regenerate Africa aims to revive this model, showing that, when managed well, livestock can boost soil health, reduce synthetic inputs, and improve farm profitability. The organization continues to scale up regenerative practices across its farms and reserves to build sustainable, nature-aligned farming systems.
