As the world gears up for this year’s COP28 global climate conference, this year hosted in Dubai, Regenerate Africa is excited to announce that we will be presenting on the interlinkages between Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and climate change at a side event during COP28 on December 3rd, from 15:00 – 16:30pm local time at the Uganda Pavilion.
We are excited that our very own program leader Niona Nakuya and Executive Director Charles Kabiswa will represent Regenerate Africa.
The impact of climate change and climate-related emergencies affect all aspects of human life and health, with significant, but often neglected, negative consequences on the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of women and girls. SRHR including family planning has been largely left out of climate change adaptation strategies, negotiations and action. Realizing SRHR is crucial to achieving gender equality, health, well-being and for overcoming marginalization and it must also, therefore, be a central component of gender-responsive adaptation to climate change.
The event will begin with first-hand field stories on how sexual and reproductive health is especially vulnerable to the climate crisis across different countries. This will be followed by sharing diverse experiences from 10 countries advocating for and implementing policies and programs at the nexus of SRHR, Gender and climate change, as well as sharing of a call to action. The audience will be given space to share some experiences before Q&A with participants. The session will end with a short networking.
By the end of the event, participants will have a deeper understanding of the intersectionality of SRHR, family planning, and climate action in the African region. The event aims to generate concrete recommendations and commitments to inform policy-making processes and inspire on-the-ground actions that contribute to sustainable and equitable development.
