Joshua is a Natural Resource and Environmental management Ugandan Scientist with professional experience of 21 years. He graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture specializing in Soil Science at Makerere University in Uganda. In 2008, he obtained a Master’s of Science in Soil Science degree from the same Institution and his thesis was focused on, ‘Enhancement of cattle manure quality and utilization for crop production on smallholder farming systems in Central Uganda.’ For over ten years until September 2011, he worked for Environmental Alert – a National Non-Governmental Organization in Uganda. He has experience and exposure on issues of sustainable agriculture and natural resources management, climate change and related policy analysis, lobbying and advocacy at community,local, national and international levels. He has engaged with smallholder farmers, policy makers, private sector, political leaders, researchers and scientists among others in the field of agriculture, environment and natural resources (e.g. soil, land-use, forestry, wetlands, water, energy, waste, minerals) management, climate change adaptation & mitigation, renewable energy access, water, sanitation and hygiene.
At Environmental Alert, he served under the following capacities: Senior Program Officer Environment and Natural Resources and Coordinator of the Uganda Forest Working Group (2008-2011); Program Officer Environment and Natural Resources (2006-2008); Assistant Project Officer for a project on Integrated Nutrient Management (2002-2006). Joshua has conducted several professional consultancies in agriculture,environment & natural resources management and climate change adaptation & mitigation issues for
various clients from private sector, government institutions and civil society in Uganda and East Africa. He is a Senior Scientist and Consultant.
In November 2011, he joined University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria for his Doctoral Studies. He was based at the Institute of Soil Research and the Centre for Development Research and his thesis focuses on, ‘Understanding the impacts of climate change and variability on key selected smallholder banana farming systems in Central Uganda.’ The study is funded by Austrian Development Cooperation through the Austrian Partnership Program in higher Education and Research. He completed his Doctoral studies on 23rd April 2015. He published a cumulative thesis will 2 of his articles published in
International peer reviewed Journals with impact factor/s. Joshua has authored and co-authored several publications including scientific journal articles, technical reports, case studies, policy briefs, issues papers, posters, monographs, videos, and conference & workshop presentations. In 2014, Joshua rejoined Environmental Alert and served as a Program Manager (for the period 2014 to 2015) and as Programme Director, until 2016. On 1st March 2016, Joshua was appointed Executive Director at
Environmental Alert. He served in this position for 5 years and 10 months, until 31st December 2021.
Currently, Joshua is an Independent – Scientist and Consultant on Agriculture, Soil Science, Environment, Natural Resources Management, Climate Change, Life Sciences. He is the Proprietor of Integrated Farms – Uganda, whose goal is to, ´´Demonstrate Nature based solutions for community-based climate change adaptation, mitigation; improved livelihoods; biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of the Environment and natural resources.´´
